We spend a lot of our time here in the shop attaching motors to different kinds of bikes. We convert mountain bikes, road bikes, recumbent bikes, and folding bikes. Almost anything on two wheels can accommodate an electric motor. Our go-to brand of choice? The BionX electric bike motor kit. We use BionX because it's the most adaptable system. We can install it into different size rims, the motor comes in varying power levels, and the battery can be mounted almost anywhere. Depending on what is important to you, the electric bike kit can be optimized for your style of riding.
Let's take a look at some of the different options for the BionX electric bike kit.
If weight is your primary concern, you've come to the right place. The BionX PL250 Lightweight System is our lightest electric bike kit to date, adding only 12 lbs to your existing bike. That's practically the same weight as a large backpack or a baby seat. Since the battery is smaller (22 Volt, 6.4 Amp-hour), it doesn't have as much range as the larger kits. With pedaling, the super light kit can reach about 15 miles on a charge. Of course, like all systems made by BionX, this system has regenerative braking and regenerative pedal mode. If you're ambitious, you can charge the battery while you ride and squeeze a few more miles out of your trip. Just remember, this system is built to be lightweight, not powerful or fast. If you're looking for one of those options, keep reading.
BionX bike motors come in different motor wattage ratings. The PL250 is 250 watts, and the PL500 is 500 watts. Pretty self-explanatory, right? Well contrary to common sense, the 500 watt system is not necessarily the most powerful. Though it IS the fastest (skip to the next section if you have a need for speed), the BionX PL350 system actually has better torque for hills. The 36-volt Lithium battery runs for 20-25 miles on a single charge and can be mounted on the water bottle mount or on a rear rack.
If you're looking for the best of both worlds, the limited edition BionX PL350 SL XL runs on a 48-volt battery, has a longer range, and is 20% lighter than the standard BionX PL350. This system will be available in April 2011 for a limited time, so contact us to get added to our waiting list!
I know, many of you are itching to go 40 mph on your bicycle. Sadly, this isn't going to happen. The BionX PL500 is our high-speed kit, sacrificing torque for speed. On a 26" or 700c wheel, this kit can power a bike up to 25 mph. Ever ride a bike this fast? Trust me, it's fast enough. Like the PL350, this system allows for different battery mounts, as well as rim sizes. Be sure to check with your local DMV concerning the legality of electric bikes over 20 mph. In some states, this system could be illegal on the streets.
The BionX electric bike kit is improving every year. Each version has four different levels of pedal-assistance, as well as a throttle. It's smooth, quiet, and highly responsive.
