The Lite handles identically to a normal bicycle, and is pedaled much the same way. However, the battery provides the power that will assist the rider, doubling the power of your pedal strokes. This makes hill climbing and long rides no problem, and will let anyone keep up with the leader of the pack.
The Lite is completely silent, so only those in the know will even know you're on an electric ride. Because of the internal hub, which can shift even when stopped at a light, this bike is a perfect urban commuter. Here in Manhattan we have several messengers who have been using Lite's everyday, which highlights the strongest aspect of the Lite - Reliability. These bikes just keep going and going, and never seem to have a problem. The lightweight, but rugged Aluminum frame looks great and will last many thousands of miles.
The Lite is powered by a Panasonic 250 watt brushless DC motor and weighs 45 pounds with the battery. With a fully charged battery pack you can expect a range of up to 28 miles on your ride, with a maximum speed of about 17 mph. (better hill climbing or higher top-speeds are available with gearing changes) The battery can be easily removed from the bike for easy charging or if you occasionally prefer a more 'conventional' bike ride.
All Lite's come equipped with Tektro 841 V brakes. The internal hub is controlled by a SRAM twist-shift mounted on the handlebars. The tires are made from a compound specially formulated for electric bikes. Everything on the Giant Lite is fully adjustable to fit riders of every size, including the seat, stem and handlebars. It takes about 3 hours to charge the battery fully, and if you commute to work everyday on your Lite, it will cost about $3 per year in electricity. We also offer charger carrying bags to go on your handlebars of your LaFree Lite, so you can charge on the go for extra long adventures.
