One of the most detrimental things that can happen in life is a chronic or recurring injury to the legs or joints. Losing mobility is frustrating, painful, and can really hamper the lifestyle of someone used to physical activity. Mobility aids like canes, walkers, and wheelchairs help to ease the pain, but they can't bring back the mobility a person once had in their youth.
Although not specifically designed for rehabilitation, we've seen a number of people using kick scooters as an efficient mobility aid. Adult scooters have come a long way, and many of them now have wide boards for easier balance, shock-absorbant tires, and front and rear brakes. They're quicker than walking, and they can help to take a lot of stress off of a knee or leg injury. Although this is a great way to get around, there is some risk involved. Going too fast on a kick scooter could cause additional injury, so use them at your own discretion! NYCeWheels carries a few different brands of kick scooters, and we've seen each one used in a unique way for mobility aid. Here are a few great stories from the last year.
Joe limped into our store on a crutch and a walking boot. Working in construction, a sharp beam lacerated his leg, leaving him in a cast for up to six months. In his early thirties, Joe is a pretty athletic guy. Being immobile for half a year just wasn't an option for him. He saw the Xootr kick scooters on the streets of Manhattan and decided to come to our store to check them out.
Testing out the Xootr MG kick scooter, Joe found that the wider deck and the dual front and rear brakes provided enough surface area to support his injured foot so that he could get around without a crutch. As an added bonus, his ten year old son could use his scooter when he didn't need it. The adjustable handlebar makes it a versatile vehicle for his whole family.
Built with large 7" aluminum wheels, a sturdy deck, and an efficient front brake, the Xootr kick scooters are some of the best kick scooters we've ever ridden. There are five different models to choose from!
John is in his sixties and has been using a kick scooter as a mobility aid for the past eleven years. His kick scooter of choice? The Goped KnowPED kick scooter. Riding on wide, rubber wheels, the KnowPED provides a bit more cushion to its ride than the Xootr scooters. The wider wheels also provide added stability.
John relies on his Goped KnowPED when he's traveling, and on his recent cruise to Alaska, used it to get around easily on the deck of the ship. He is also able to exercise with his scooter, and his doctor encourages this as a way to keep his leg muscles active. Additionally, the KnowPED is a useful way to tow heavy objects, and John used it to help his daughter move into her college dorm.
Though the Goped KnowPED has only one style, is it available in multiple colors, and each one comes complete with a front brake, rear fender brake, and folding handlebars for compact storage.
Though kick scooters work as mobility aids for Joe and John, they may not work for everyone with a physical handicap. Curious to see if a kick scooter is right for you?
